Our Champion

“If you’re looking for adventure, just spend a few minutes with 13-year-old Jacob. He has peered over the edge of the Grand Canyon, taken in the striking view atop Seattle’s Space Needle, and witnessed Yellowstone’s Old Faithful geyser shoot for the sky. Traveling with his own entourage, complete with high-tech wheelchair and medical equipment, hasn’t slowed Jacob down. He whizzed down alpine slides, basked on sunny beaches, fished in mountain streams, and has never met a roller coaster he didn’t like.” So reads the introduction to Jacob Mockbee, our Children’s Miracle Network Champion Child.

Jacob was chosen as Arizona’s champion for “Champions presented by Walmart and Sam’s Club, a Children’s Miracle Network Program” and the announcement made at the Marana Walmart yesterday. We could not be more proud or excited to have Jacob as our champion and ambassador for the Children’s Miracle Network, Tucson Medical Center and Arizona.  Jacob truly is an inspiration for all of us. Jacob’s zeal for life, his terrific sense of humor, his marvelous personality and concern for others are what really engage you when you meet this young man, not his wheelchair or the limitations that you might think Spina Bifida would have on a child.

Spina Bifida is a birth defect that affects 1 in 1000 births. Jacob was diagnosed with Spina Bifida prior to his birth and his family spent the time prior to his birth preparing for some of the medical treatments he would need. Along with Spina Bifida Jacob has other complications which together mean that Jacob is wheelchair bound and tube fed. After you learn a little about Jacob you realize that Jacob isn’t seeing ‘limitations’ of Spina Bifida, only opportunities and challenges to be met. At his sixth grade graduation he was awarded the “Jacob Mockbee” award. Named in his honor, this award recognized outstanding commitment to and hours spent serving his community. Jacob has also been named City of Tucson’s “Student of the Week”. Jacob speaks at fundraisers, on the radio, or on T.V. sharing his story and how Children’s Miracle Network and Tucson Medical Center have made such a difference in his life. Jacob’s life experience along with his sparkling personality makes him a fabulous spokesman drawing attention to a serious need within our community.

It is hard to imagine that with such zeal for life this young man has seen the inside of an operating theater more than 50 times, the first two surgeries when he was just six hours old. Jacob and his family have worked hard and drawn upon and collaborated with the experts at TMC to create this full life. Jacob has spent approximately two years of his thirteen years alive in hospital. The other eleven years have been about living life to the fullest often by giving back to the community. Well done Jacob. We’re so very proud of you and honored to have you as our Champion.

Champions is presented by Walmart and Sam’s Club, a Children’s Miracle Network program.

Tucson Mama shares Birth Stories

Get a group of new mamas together and inevitably birth experiences come up in the topic of conversation. Giving birth is a life altering experience by definition and sharing stories of that experience, powerful. Local parenting blogger, Tucson Mama, has been sharing birth stories on her blog as of late. This little excerpt comes from her own experience.

Tucson Mama with her son
"The next time they checked me I was at 8cm, and this was only a few hours after arriving, so I was ecstatic. The L&D nurse, who was awesome, brought in the delivery cart and told me how excited she was that we’d be delivering on her shift, which ended at 8am, and how quickly I was progressing for a first-time mom. She brought in the mirror and S and I talked about meeting our baby at dawn. I was so happy that labor was going so quickly and smoothly—for some reason I thought it would, but I almost felt guilty with the quick easy progression. The nurse said she wanted my doc to come by soon and break my waters to keep the momentum going. She checked me an hour or so later and, mysteriously, I was at 7cm. It’s not supposed to go like that! From 4 to 5 to 8 to…7? "

Live, Learn, Dream, Run - Girls on the Run of Tucson

IMG_2777

TMC had the honor of hosting Girls on the Run of Tucson (GOTR) for their culminating 5K event this Saturday. It was awe-inspiring.

GOTR is a program for 3rd through 5th grade girls that aims to transform how they perceive themselves and their place in society. Hopefully, the program captures and inspires the girls before their perception of self, that spark of confidence in self is eliminated.  This transformation is through the empowerment of achievement, and through building the tools to make a healthy lifestyle choices during this formative time in a girls life.

You know when you go to an event and you have an inkling before you get there of just how powerful it might be, but still you're a little bit overwhelmed by the impact on you? Yes? That was Saturday's GOTR 5K for me. Watching a gaggle of 3rd-5th graders and their running buddies bubble in anticipation of the challenge ahead and then, not much later watching them striding across the finish line radiant and powerful. I had tears in my eyes. I admit, I do tend toward the emotional, but I wasn't the only one. It wasn't just a race, or even a race, this weekend's 5K marked a milestone on a much bigger journey. A milestone of challenges met and overcome. Skills and confidence to deal with larger challenges that may lay ahead. Oh, to bottle up that energy, that promise, that hope, that power, and share it with all young women. Thank you GOTR - you are inspirational!

Introducing the TMC Breastfeeding Support Program

Late last week I had the great pleasure of meeting with four of TMC's International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). My purpose? To learn more about the programs and projects that they and TMC have put into place resulting in the recent IBCLC Care Award. TMC is the only hospital in Southern Arizona to earn this IBCLC Care Award commendation, and one of only three in the whole state of Arizona.

Over the next few weeks and months I hope to introduce you to the lactation consultants, to a whole wealth of resources that TMC provides and that they recommend, and also to introduce you to women who have breast fed, often with the support of these resources. Watch this space.
