Be Safe Saturday

Turtle Backpack

This weekend was jam packed full of great family events, another reminder of what a great community we have in Tucson. My family hit Be Safe Saturday on TMC's campus on Saturday morning and ended up staying much longer than the hour and a half we planned. We weren't alone. Eight thousand folks showed up for this annual event and boy, did we have fun.

Tomas and Shelley the Turtles, TMC's mascots, were out in force and their message was getting across. TMC staff and volunteers fitted and gave out over three thousand bike helmets to protect the heads of Tucson's children. Kohl's Cares and TMC were boosting booties by giving away free booster seats. You could have the booster seats installed correctly right there! Car seat safety technicians, including our local law enforcement, checked installation of car seats. (Did you know 85% of car seats are typically incorrectly installed?)

My family loved the treasure hunt, figuring out which booth was a question booth and then learning about all sorts of safety from how to bike safely on Tucson streets, safety plans for our home, to what insects and animals to be wary of in our wild and bizarre desert landscape. All those questions added up to a sweet Desert Kids Safety Program backpack. My daughter hasn't taken her backpack off since receiving it, other then when we peel it off in the evening under much duress. There were jumping castles and martial arts demonstrations, a climbing wall and free ice cream. From this mama's view, Be Safe Saturday really was an amazing event.Did you go? Watch this space for dates for next year. You don't want to miss it!
